Newbie to have bladder removed

Post a new topicby MikeFla on Fri Aug 21, 2009 5:35 pm

Hi All. Unfortuntly, I am paralized (Waist Down) and have a Nurogenic Bladder that has become sick beyond repair. They have chased repeated infections with Antibiotics and the last year.... I was sick nearly every other week... that I am not on Antibiotics? The last straw was last weekend, I went into the ER deathly sick with a major infection. The Urologist and the Infections Desease Doctor both feel the bladder must be removed and the prostate... if I am to improve the quality of life and live longer. They feel I will surely die from infection within a year at the rate things are going.
Question #1. If they tie the Ureters to a stoma outside the body... what am I looking at, in terms of maintenence and issues , problems, etc, etc.
Question #2. When the bladder is totally removed, can I expect a relatively decent normal life... or am I screwed ....
Lastly, I have been warned, this is a major surgery and esspecially for a paralized person... but I have no options. Im scared, but, I really see no options.... If we do not have the surgery, the infections will get bigger and even more frequent! Advise, and any thoughts of comfort appreciated. I have lived 6 years as a paraplegic... life has been very tough! But I will try to go on! Suggestions, Thanks, MIke from FLorida!
