Side affects from surgery to remove Superficial Bladder canc

Post a new topicby Larry D on Tue Aug 07, 2007 6:30 pm

About 3 years ago I was diagnosed with superficial (low grade) bladder cancer The cancer was removed via a cystoscopy and flugration. I've been very lucky and so far have had no reoccurrence. My problem is the affects I'm experiencing from the surgery. I often experience urgency and occassionally burning sensations and pain in the area of my bladder. I have taken three medications, detrol, ditropan, and enablex all of which have been ineffective. My diet is similar to what one would follow for IC
I would like to resume a mjore normal diet and my question is has anyone else had similar issues and found any treatments that are helpful?

Given the symptoms you describe it might be worth while to try the IC drug Elmiron to see if it is effective.

I just had an operation to remove a superficial bladder cancer. They just removed the cathater today, however, I am experiencing a lot of burning when I urinate. I'm wondering if this will go away with time, but you say you have had it now for 3 years. Is this normal at first, do you think I should tell my doctor about it. Good luck to you.

It is normal to experience burning in the urethra once the catheter is removed for a few days. As long as you are on an antibiotic this should not be a sign of an infection, good luck

I see you wroth this in August. I also has a TUR to remove low grade bladded cancer in early August. All symptoms of the surgery slowly went away and were gone in about 6 weeks. I had my first follow up cysto in November. He saw some redness in the scar but was not overly concerned. He did a biopsy anyway and it was negative. I am now going in for my second follow up cysto in a week. My stress levels are starting to rise a little in anticipation. I hope and pray that all will be OK.

Just an update, My scope in Feb. was normal and then my scope in May was normal. The urologist also ran a cystology urine test which was normal. My annual physical showed some microscopic bleeding which my internest and also my Urologist seem to not be concerned about. It is now one year since my surgery and I go in for my 4th post op scope tomorrow. Yes I am nervous but I have had three clean scops in a row so I am hoping and praying for the best.
