Cystoscopy next weekMorning
47 year old BPH suffer. I had passed a blood clot about a month ago after ejaculation while urinating. I have not had any blood since then. Recent physical/urological exam were all negative for blood in urine etc. PSA 2.0. Urologist scheduled Cat Scan ( awaiting results) as well as cystoscopy next Monday. IUro said he was confident he would not find anything but he would not be doing his job if we did not pursue this path. I am curious to hear from others who have had this test. I had it about ten year's ago and am hoping that with advances in medicine it might not be as bad as it was last time. I would welcome any comments on this. Thanks SAF
Re: Cystoscopy next weekI've had multiple cystos, and each seems to get easier and more routine, but that is most likely due to the patient rather than the technique or instruments (flexible is preferred). My first, conducted while I was experiencing intense urge incon and bladder spasms, was the most uncomfortable, both during and after the procedure. Subsequent procedures have become rather routine to me. OBTW, I never had anything more than a topical anesthetic for these procedures.
Anyway, my Uro was able to identify prostate shape/size, stricture, condition of bladder walls, and ureters, etc. It was through a cysto identifying thickening of my bladder walls that finally convinced me to undergo my recent PVP. I was tired of taking meds (eight years), and they obviously were not effective in preventing bladder damage, so felt it time to find a more permanent solution.
Re: Cystoscopy next weekThanks for your reply. I will be under local anesthetic as well. ( I was told to make sure I had someone to drive me home afterwards)
I remember last time I had a catheter for this I felt like I was urinating razor blades for two days..and naturally we are told to drink a lot of fluids after this so it is a Catch 22 here...does tylenol or advil help with this or do I need some prescription pain killer/
Re: Cystoscopy next weekWe are all different, so only you can judge your pain relief needs, but I never used any type of pain reliever after a cysto, biopsy, or even my PVP. I have been taking Tylenol post-PVP to reduce inflamation, but there has been no significant pain. On my first cysto, the initial void wasn't bad because the topical was still effective, but not long after, I voided for a second time and thought that explained why there were metal rails next to toilets. Later cystos never seemed that bad, and I don't think my PVP has seemed that bad either.
Since I only had topical anesthesia, driving home after the cysto procedures has never been an issue. Doesn't hurt to wear a pad in your underwear if you have a long drive, just in case. I always seem to have urge issues for a day or two, post cysto. Driving home after a local anesthetic should be no different than doing so after a dental appointment. Consult your urologist, just in case! Good luck!
Re: Cystoscopy next weekThanks for all your input.
I had the test yesterday and happy to report everything was fine. I must admit the worry about it was worse than the procedure. However I am still burning down below today. It does not burn as much as I thought it would when I urinate. I bet the cystogram I had ten years ago was with the use of a rigid scope as opposed to the flexible one the doctor used yesterday. I am just eager to have this burning go away so I can get back to my life and not worry about my urinary tract and prostate.
Re: Cystoscopy next weekThat's great news, SAF. Yah, I know what you mean about anticipation of things be put where none were meant to be! Drink lots of water to keep the flow going, and that should help reduce the burning and duration.
Re: Cystoscopy next weekIt sure is a load off my mind..
I am four days post cystoscopy and still having a little discomfort. Burning when urinating is much better but still burns when I sit. should I be concerned about this or is it just my body taking a little longer to get over this invasive procedure? Your comments would be appreciated.
Re: Cystoscopy next weekI hate to cop out with the "we are all different" answer, but it is true. I only recall experiencing pain upon voiding (post cysto) for the first few voids, and certainly no more than a day. Your system could be more sensitive, you may have experienced an accidental trauma from the scope, or any number of possibilities. Since you are still experiencing burning, you might want to watch for a possible Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), which can occur (rarely) post-cysto, but it is most likely just part of the healing process. This site has a good section for UTI, which provides details on symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment, if you are really concerned.
I am now three weeks post-PVP, and still have some burning/itching and bleeding, which vary by day and even time of day, but nothing more than a minor annoyance. I try to remain vigilent without excessive worry, so I keep an eye out for sudden changes and/or UTI symptoms, drink lots of water, and try to be patient as my body heals from a rather traumatic experience.
Re: Cystoscopy next weekAppreciate the information. I figure since I have BPH that this invasive procedure probably aggravated that as well. Overall I am better but was hoping to be feeling "normal" by now...
I was on Levaquin for three days post scope in hopes of preventing UTI. I will check this site out and once again appreciate your input.
