Flomax issues

Post a new topicby HighNoon on Sun Oct 28, 2007 1:02 pm

I'm a new member to this forum and hope that some of you with experience can help me out. I was recently diagnosed with BPH via CT scan as well as the usual physical ( I am 57) . Prostate size 45CC. I have an IPSS Score of 17. Most of the time, though diminished, urine flow is pretty good except for first void in the morning. That's a slow process, but fine the rest of the day. I also have some irritative symptoms leading to urgency.

My uro started me on Flomax (0.4mg/day). I've been on it for a week. It works well but leaves me with a headache, blurry vision and a light-headed feeling. Will this diminish over time or does it always stay the same. I'm not sure I can stay on it if this is permanent.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I am sure that each person reacts differently to a particular drug. I took Flomax for two years and had no side effects whatsoever. In the beginning it was helping my symptoms, but then it stopped. So I switiched to another drug, which did little to help me, but again, I had no side effects. You will just have to wait it out and see if those side effects go away.

if you have side effects from the drug, you should stop it and your md should try something else. there is a lot of choice for bph treatment.

What are your thoughts on laser therapy? Is it a permanent fix? Are enough cells left behind where a prostate cancer could ultimately start? Is the removed tissue sent to pathology to look for cancerous cells or are they vaporized?

Thank you.

I have to get up 4 to 5 times a night. Tried Flomax generic equivalent known as Tamsul 0,4 SR which does not help. Has anyone switched from Flomax/Tamsul to another drug (such as Xatral) with success?

I took flomax for about six weeks. It helped reduce the size of prostate fro 45cc to 24 cc but I had difficulty with weakness and lightheadedness. The doc gave me avadart and I will be having an RF therapy treatment on Tuesday to shrink the Prostate. He said that some people do not take to Flomax very well. Does anyone out there know if you have to stay on avadart after the RF therapy treatment. Just wondering because a CD I watched said no but my urologist said yes.

I think a good answer, although general, to the prostate drug question is that almost everybody responds a bit differently to any given prostate medication, be it Flomax, Avodart, etc. As the urologist said, there are quite a few that can be tried if side effects continue. You have to give some of them more time to let your body get used to them. A week is not long enough generally. Your doc can tell you which drug he thinks will benefit you in any given case. If you are experiencing severe side effects, let them know.
