Had my Laser TURP Friday--will update as I heal

Post a new topicby renegade_7 on Mon Sep 29, 2008 11:48 am

Those who read this site's posts know that I was getting the laser turp this week. Got it done on the 26th, took the catheter out the next morning, but due to swelling, only passed a little bit of fluids, then could not pass any, and was re-cathetered. Went home Sunday with catheter, and will have catheter removed tomorrow, Tuesday, after the Uro fills my bladder to ensure I can void. Too bad for me, I was hoping to go home catheter free. Not in a whole lot of pain right now, just discomfort due to the cath. Also, am on vicadin, so that is most likely the reason.

As for the swelling, my surgeon told me this is common, and the swelling should be gone by Tuesday, when I get the cath. removed. I hope so, because these caths. are not fun, especially the insert and extraction. Some of you already know this. I feared the cath more than the procedure. By the way, my procedure, lasser turp, was by the (Holeum) method. Same as the PVP, I am told.

As discussed before, I will try to give weekly updates on my situation, since it seems that after guys get better, they fade away, on this forum anyway. When I was contemplating this procedure, I could find very little on guys who felt thier surgury was a complete success. It seemed like the only posts were coming from guys who had complications. Either way, I intend to keep posting as the weeks go by. I anticipate a rather long process, so I took four weeks off from work. I'll return when I am healed, sooner the better for me.

Anyone contemplating such a proceedure, feel free to ask any questions; I asked as many as I could, and still don't think I asked enough. But either way, I was having voiding troubles, so surgery was in my future. I am 53yrs. old if anyones interested. Keep you informed.....

Thanks for the report. Seems every procedure is different. I knew nothing about the insertion of the catheter in my procedure, but the removal is not high on my list of things I want to experience again. Sorry about your swelling and having to have that catheter for several days. I was able to void immediately and was dismissed...but then had all those problems I've detailed on here. Maybe you'll get this catheter thing behind you today and all will be smooth sailing from there. I'm quite sure you'll be glad you went ahead with the procedure. Hang in there.

Please post an update as to how things went. I'm considering this surgery soon and would really like feedback as to timeline for normalcy. Do you feel your life is back to normal? Any major complications? Thanks so much for your post.

It has been a long time since I posted or read on this forum, so Renegade was right about how we tend to drop off after things go better. I want to say that after all the troubles I had, probably because I expected it all to be a piece of cake, I progressed and finally got to the point I am just doing great. It took a few months, and that was a bit on the abnormal side, but I'm not sure anything is really normal. Everyone is different. My frequency is what I would consider totally acceptable. I sleep all night most nights, sometimes waking around 5:30 with an urge to get up for bathroom purposes, but sometimes even then rolling over and going back to sleep without going. My wife and I both talk about how wonderful it is for me to run into the bathroom for a few seconds instead of minutes, to be comfortable, to travel 5 hours without having to urgently go to the bathroom. So, even with all the problems I detailed in another topic, mine having been a combination PVP and TURP, I have absolutely NO regrets. Hope that helps.

A follow-up as of Jun 09. No major problems noted. Not flowing as strong as I was after the removal of my second cath, but still flowing OK, and sleeping OK. Able to go 4-5 hours between voids, depending on my fluid intake, of course. No regrets as of yet. Glad I did it.

Another update. Has been a month shy of a year and everything still working great. Sometimes the flow is strong, sometimes not as strong. But never weak like before the TURP. Doc said sometimes we have scar tissue issues around the 5th or 6th mont after, but thank God, none of that as yet. So, almost a year into it and doing fine. Don't have to constantly go. The healing process for me was an easy one. I had my proceedure done in Columbia University Hospital, and the surgeon did a great job. So far so good.

I had the Holeum about 2 months ago. I love it, no discomfort except for cath. I had wear the cath for a week but is worth it, The Holeum is the latest and best procedure.
