My HoLAP experience

Post a new topicby Jack377 on Thu Feb 05, 2009 3:49 pm

I have just underwent the HoLAP procedure which essentially vaporizes all or part of the prostate with a laser. The urologist had previously performed a yearly routine prostate screening exam which included the DRE and PSA blood test. The PSA was within normal range, but the prostate was susprisingly, only slightly enlarged, as I have endured a 20 year history with all the classic BPH symptoms - difficulting starting, not emptying the bladder, nighttime bathroom visits, etc. A cystoscopy procedure showed my baldder to have a significant muscular tissue development, probably resulting from years of straining to urinate. The urologist also suggested that my nervous system contributed to muscle tenseness and the inability to maintain a relaxed composure, maybe contributing to some of the problem. Although not significantly enlarged, apparently my prostate was squeezing the urinary tract enough to create my problems and the bladder's condition, thus warranting the HoLAP. The procedure is performed on an out patient basis, and I was back home by noon on the day of the event without problems. Difficulty was just starting. I had the miserable experience have having to wear a catheter - supposedly for only 24 hours . I had a reaction to my pain medication and had to discontinue using it. The catheter, pain , and general discomfort prevented me from sleeping. Complete urinary retention resulted after the catheter was removed the next morning. Complete appetite loss, sleep loss, and medications left me feeling like i was in a near zombie state. Ofcourse, doctors are buzy people and difficult to reach, even in somewhat urgent circumstances. After a full day of acute retention , I was able to convince his office people that I really needed to see the urologist himself and was able to do so after his normal appointments were completed. He's a likeable guy, and will spend time explaining things to his patients. But, I think he may be spreading himself a bit thin. He didn't seem too concerned about my difficulties, but said that my retention problem was somewhat rare, and replaced a catheter and suggested that I wear it for an extended number of days. This could allow for any swelling to reduce, and progress the healing process. I'm just apprehensive about the retention problem still being present when the catheter is removed in a few days. Has anyone gone through a HoLAP procedure and experienced some of my problems ? And, what was the eventual outcome ?
