Post TURP urgencyI have been diagnosed with BPH and symptoms included getting up 4 to 5 times per night as well as having to plan my daily journey to ensure that I had adequate pit stops along the way. Frustration led to me having Revolex laser TURP 3 weeks ago, which apears to have been successful. Bleeding stopped after 2 days and the stream is slightly better. Urologist suggested that I try to delay empying the bladder in order to re-train the bladder. However, I still feel urgency at night (still 4 to 5 times) and very often in the morning after drinking tea. I also have a slight burning/irritation sensation when I try to delay and I get only get relief for a short time after voiding. Am I being too impatient? Has anyone else had similar experiences?
Re: Post TURP urgencyAfter my laser TURP last year, I had a burning sensation even with the catheter which had to remain for about a week or so after the surgery. It gradually went away, so I'm certain that your urologist will tell you it is too early still for that, and I myself think that part will go away in time. And yes, I still had some urgency shortly after the surgery which went away as well. I stay away from caffeinated drinks and drink decaf coffee now, which has worked out better for me. Now, several months later, I can sleep all the way through the night unless I drink something right before bed, then I have to get up only once and I'm good the rest of the night. Urine flow was remarkable even right after they took the catheter out, and still is. Give it a little time and see if there are changes. And if you need to, don't be afraid to call the doctor's office and ask them what's normal for this time frame and what's not. They should be more than happy to help you after such a surgery with any concern. And you can always post here. I check the site almost every day.
Re: Post TURP urgencyThanks Mrcoyote - I have noticed that you spend a lot of your time assisting others. I certainly appreciate your posts and I am sure that others on the forum also appreciate your input and comments.
I have been OD-ing on tea and I will decrease the intake on your advice. I will update the fourm as time goes by so that others who have been throught the post-TURP process can benefit from my experiences.
Re: Post TURP urgencyYou're most welcome and thanks for the kind comments. I'm not trying to play urologist here, and I hope everybody is well aware of that.....but......I do know that most guys have a lot of concerns about these kinds of things and a great number of them are very reluctant to discuss it with others, much less go to a urologist for exams and treatments. I myself am not crazy about it either, but I knew I had to be the one to take care of my own health, and that nobody else would do it. And I have a very good urologist whom I trust completely, which I now think is the key to the whole thing. As far as the laser TURP goes,
it was an unbelievably successful surgery in my case, so I now have a new life which is now absent of all the nonsense I had to go through on a daily basis.....planning bathroom trips, bathroom locations, no long trips, I could barely fly anywhere because of the "fasten seatbelt" sign (don't laugh, it's true), and made one overseas trip (15 hr. flight) and practically had to LIVE in the bathroom which didn't make the other passengers happy I'm sure, but hey.........what could I do? Horrible. But that's over and now I'm just trying to stay on top of my health and do all the right things to remain that way. Oh yeah, there are some other things that may or may not occur after your recent TURP, but I don't want to even bring them up if you are not experiencing them! But if you want to know in advance so you won't be freaked out, I'll post. These things may never happen but if they did, people should know it is normal (according to my urologist). PS> my guy told me to try to not drink anything after 6pm and see what happens Of course, that was before my surgery. It helped at night. Now, for me, it doesn't matter. Well, maybe a bit. It might make me go once, but sometimes not.
Re: Post TURP urgencyMrcoyote, thanks for the reply. Reading you pre-TURP symptoms, I guess my problems were not nearly as bad as yours were and your full recovery gives me confidence.
I guess at this stage I would rather not know too much about the complications that could occur. I tried your suggestion of not having any liquids after 6pm, but no difference yet- I am still getting up 4/5 times per night. I guess it is optimistic for me to expect improvement in symptoms so soon. The urgency is still there, but not really as bad as it was in weeks 1 and 2 - I am now 3 1/2 weeks post TURP. My urologist believes that the Revolix laser that he is using is superior to other TURP technologies and he sees his patients much sooner after TURP than the norm. Testimony to this is the fact that my post-TURP bleeding was minimal. My first appointment with him was 9 days after TURP and the follow up appointment (hopefully my last!) is scheduled for 5 weeks post-TURP. I am encouraged by your recovery and the feedback of some of the others who have posted on this forum. I will post my progress from time to time to assist others who might be considering TURP. I found the forum very beneficial to me when I was considering TURP and I would like to reciprocate by assisting others.
Re: Post TURP urgencyI feel the same way about helping others who may be considering surgery. That's my only reason for posting here as you know.
I think at this point, after your recent surgery, you pretty much have to go with what your doctor says in terms of what the result should be and how long it should take. As you might remember, the results of my laser surgery were quite different. More bleeding for a while, and then once the catheter came out, it was like I was 21 yrs. old again, and hardly any waking in the middle of the night. So, with your surgery, who knows. It might take longer to see those kind of results...I really don't know. I do know this. All urologists have their own opinions on what is best for the patient. These can differ greatly from one to the next. I'm not saying one is "better" than another. Just different opinions. And each person is a bit different as well, so there you go. I hope you will keep us informed as to your progress and wish you the best of luck going forward.
Re: Post TURP urgencyThis is my final update. I am now 3 months post TURP and all plumbing systems seem to be working well. I only get up once or twice per night and the urgency is no longer there during the day. In the mornings, when I load up with numerous cups of tea, I tend to go more often, but all of this is manageable and a major improvement on my pre-TURP condition.
Re: Post TURP urgencyI would give it a little more time and see what happens. I'm guessing the "burning" will eventually go away completely. My results were a bit different, as you may have read here. But then again, everybody is a bit different and you can't really compare surgeries across the board. If it goes on, be sure to tell your urologist you're still having problems. Good luck.
