Banning circumcision until males are able to consent

Post a new topicby tiamatmack on Mon Apr 14, 2008 9:14 pm

I am in the process of contacting legislators about the possibility of getting a bill proposed that would give infant males the protection against forced circumcision until they are old enough to issue consent. I would like to hear what professionals have to say about this idea, as I am taking into account all information that I acquire before proceeding. It is of my opinion that this is an unnecessary act that borders on a form of socially accepted child abuse and that parents are taking a risk for the sake of a misguided religious tradition.

While I understand that this might not be a popular view for those that have religion, I am inclined to point out that they (the religious) are generally for the protection of unborn children and this is really just an extension of that protection to the point of protecting a child's body from harm even after they are born. There is some common ground here, although I believe that it will not be viewed as such. I do understand their need for circumcision due to biblical passages, but why do it when the child is unable to voice their opinion and why not just wait until they can consent? If the parents make a valid enough point then the child would follow their ideas about the practice.

Hi there!

Although I am very opposed to Routine Infant Circumcision (RIC) I really doubt that you will get very far. I am 44 and have been dealing with this issue since the age of 4, when I began asking why I had circ scars. I have spent a life time investigating the procedure and have reached the conclusion that people will do what people will do. On the other hand, I do feel that better options should be available to men that do not desire the circumcised state. I have seriously begun to approximate the foreskin of my penis and I honestly feel that I will be very successful in doing so. I have already developed a considerable amount of tissue and I plan to see a urologist in a few days to develop a relationship that will, hopefully, augment my program.
I understand that many men are very emotional concerning this issue and I do hope that I have not presented my self in such a way. The intense emotion that I felt toward circumcision as a boy and young man died many years ago. It is only now that I feel mature enough to follow through on a dream that I had as a child and that dream was to be intact.
