orchitis as a result of mumps - sterile?

Post a new topicby goldy on Fri Oct 19, 2007 11:34 am

Hallo

My husband and I am trying to conceive for the past few months. Just a few days ago my gynecologist asked me get my husband to have an analysis done. I've read the questionair that will accompany the sample to the lab. One of the questions was if he had mumps and if so if it affected his testes. Well, the answers are yes, he had mumps in his twenties and yes it affected his testes. My question is; could he be sterile because of the orchitis or is there some form of fertility treatment for this condition?

I would really appreciated some feedback. If it is impossible for us to have children of our own I would like to know so we can just get over it and move on.

Thank You

Yes, it can cause sterility. All he need do is give a sperm sample to see if his testicles were damaged. Note that in my case it also affected my hormone levels. He may wish to have his Testosterone levels checked to see how well his testes are working in that regard.

He might want to explore secondary hypogonadism treatment if he does have problems. I've read that in some cases it jump starts the testicles to make them function again. This might be short term however so one thing you may wish to do is bank sperm.

If the secondard hypogomadism treatments don't work he will probably want to explore going on Hormone Replacement Therapy. It can make his life 1000x better!
