Cytoscopy

Post a new topicby pookie1263 on Fri Oct 17, 2008 2:14 pm

I am a female and have a cytoscopy scheduled in two weeks because I have small amounts of blood in my urine. I am freaked out about this procedure.

Please tell me if this is painful! My doctor doesn't use any drugs in his office and I am thinking of taking something like a vicodin before I go in. I am petrified of this procedure. Does it hurt? Please tell me about the pain! I am freaked!

Pookie,
As a male, I recently refused a Cystoscopy, but my wife just had a cystoscopy and she said it was not painful. Males may have an enlarged prostate which the doctor has to plunge through to get to the bladder, but females have a clear shot to the bladder.

Brandyrun,
As I posted on this topic previously, My wife recently had a cystoscopy in the doctors office and felt no pain at all. The doctor will numb your urethra prior to insertion and except for a little pressure you should not feel any pain. It appears to be more embarrassing than painful.

I was just wondering how your procedure went. I recently had a cystoscopy to remove a stent from my kidney and bladder. There was absolutely no medication given and it was virtually pain-free. My dr. was a great doctor. The procedure was extremely fast, yet thorough.

The most important thing is that you are completely comfortable with your choice of doctor. My wife is seeing a female urologist, and I think this takes the edge off. I went with her to her cystoscopy, and while not something you would want to do every day, it was not a big deal at all. As long as you aren't having any pain at the time (UTI, cystitis, etc.), the numbing gel seems to work pretty well. I watched my wife's face, and she barely winced when the scope went in. The worst part was intermittent burning during urination for next 2-3 of days. Trying to find something I could liken the discomfort of the procedure to, I asked if she'd had worse tooth cleanings, and she said "OH, yeah!!!". :-)
