Hematuria

For the last two months, my boyfriend (32, drinker, smoker, lover of fatty foods that he is) has been having very sharp and agonizing lower abdominal pain, localized in an area we're pretty sure would be the bladder. The pain comes in an episode lasting between two hours and two days, the last of which was so severe, we were in the emergency room. The doctors did blood work and analyzed a urine sample in which they found nothing but a trace bit of blood. In fact, there are nearly no other symptoms other than frequent and urgent urination during one of these episodes - not even burning while he pees. There is no kidney pain or fever or nausea or anything, and between episodes there are no symptoms at all. The one doctor even checked the prostrate to see if that was the cause - no.The episodes seem to come on suddenly without any provocation and disappear without any either. We are without insurance and with little money and don' want to get plugged into the health care meat grinder without knowing what kind of questions we might be able to ask. Any ideas?
