basketball incident

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon May 13, 2002 12:58 am

hello doctor, if you can help me out with this question...please....

this is the incident....while playing basketball one of my friend collided into me with his teeth..which caused a few minor scratches on my cheek that leads to some bleeding on my face. the contact was no more one second long...

my friend used have sex with sex workers...he looks fine...let's just assume that he is hiv infected...

i don't think he has bleeding gum.....and if he has bleeding gum...so can i be infected in that split second contact? i am concern about this incident.... thank you very much.

You describe a very low risk exposure. You could get hiv from someone who bit you, who had THEIR OWN BLOOD, in their mouth, if they caused an opening in your skin. GR

Acute retroviral syndrome occurs in the 7-20 days after infection. It is fever, rash, swollen glands. Diarrhea is not common. We do see diarrhea in advanced AIDS. Advanced AIDS comes 8 or more years after infection. None of your descriptions of symptoms or exposure are convincing for HIV. Sounds like you need a blood test to calm your nerves and move on. Realize that if playing rough basketball was a risk factor for hiv, we'd see a lot of it! And we don't. GR
