Could it be HIV-2?Around the middle of 2001, I had one incident of protected sex with a sex worker in Malaysia. I did have some flu like symptoms sometime after that. I went to a doctor and have been tested (in US) for HIV at 1 month, 3 months and 7 months after that exposure, and the tests were all negative. My doctor seems to think that I am HIV negative.
However, sometimes I feel that I may be having oral hairy leukplakia. I have been assured by my doctor that it does not look like OHL. Could I be having HIV-2? I think the tests done at the clinic were Western Blot. Do the Elisa and WB tests done in US clinics detect both HIV-1 and HIV 2?
Re: Could it be HIV-2?Every western blot I've seen in the US in the last 10 years assays for hiv 1 and 2. Sounds like you're negative. If you're still convinced that you're one of the 1/10,000-1/1,000,000 false negatives, see an hiv specialist listed at aahivm.org.

Re: Re: Could it be HIV-2?Thanks very much for your quick reply.
Are there cases where an Elisa test would detect HIV-1/2 that WB could miss? I am referring to standard Elisa and WB tests performed in US clinics.
Every western blot I've seen in the US in the last 10 years assays for hiv 1 and 2. Sounds like you're negative...
