ELISA=Negative, WB=INTERDMINATE

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Apr 29, 2002 4:33 pm

I recently did a Western Blot & Elisa test on 11-04-2002

The Elisa test showed negative while the Western Blot showed me results that said ""

the western Blot test results are as follows:

Reading : antigen Bands
Core Antigen (GAG Protiens ) -
p17 - Positive
p24 Positive
Endonuclease Polymerase antigens (POL Protine - p13 - negative
p51 - negative
p66 - negative
Envelope Antigens (ENV Protins ) -
gp41 - Netative
gp120 - netative
gp160 - negative
Serum control band - positive
hiv- specific protine - netative

Now the report states that INTERMINATE means = “Any viral specific band is present but pattern does not meet the criteria for positive”

does this report mean that I am infected ? because the dr. could not give me any proper answers and had me do aHIV Viral Load/ HIV PCR Qantative Microbiology test . and what do the positive reading mean ?

I had sexual contact with a woman that might be infected in 29-oct-2001 I tested immediatly the next day with EIA & WB which both showed neg. I have passed almost 5.5 month preiod since my last test above.

I really am nervous.

Thanks

desperate patient

Your doctor did the right follow up test with the viral load. In my experience, the folks with negative elisas and indeterminant western blots are all UNINFECTED. You have some antibodies to some proteins similar to those seen on hiv. Many people do. But, you don't have the full compliment of proteins necessary to have a positive western blot. Therefore the test is indeterminant. Based on what you've shared here, I think this will come out ok for you.

Thank You for your reply,

well i am glad to say that all my test came negative.
Now I have one more question , the doctor says that I have to do the ELIA, WB and qualititive test againg in 4 weeks which is about next week that I complete my 4 weeks since my last test . is this ok ? a normal procedure, the doctor says I should not worry as the new test will also come negative. if it comes negative why do I have to do the tests again ?

thanks
