Hiv and Kidney diease

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Feb 23, 2002 1:55 am

I was told by my ID that there is a diease that can attack the kidney and he was not sure of the name of it. Do you know diease what that is and how it attacks the kidney's and what it does to them.
At present I have a kidney that is shrinking and the out put is only 20% and and the other kidney is only 68% is this hiv related or not, or could some of the meds that I have taken for the hiv have caused this to happen and if so what meds would have done this and should I stop the hiv meds.

Teddie, those are good and important questions. The very personal nature of what you're asking is beyond the scope of this website. There is a purely hiv related kidney disease called hiv nephropathy. It can cause kidney failure. The 2 main meds that can impair kidney function are indinavir and adefovir. We don't use adefovir any more. It never got out of trials. Tylenol and all antiinflammatories can impair kidney function. Diabetes and hypertension are the most common causes of kidney failure in the US. If your doc is not a specialist in hiv you should see one. Many are listed at aahivm.org.
