Varicocele surgery

Post a new topicby variowife on Thu Oct 25, 2007 11:47 am

Hi, I am new to this forum, so forgive me if this is a repeat post...... I am curious to see if anyone out there has had any personal success with conceiving after the procedure? How long did it take? Our doctor has told us about three months...... Thanks!

My husband had a bilateral varicocele on Aug. 21. His urologist said the same thing. I'll let you know if we have any success. Good Luck

So have we! We're not getting any younger over here, either! Good luck. I hope we both get our babies soon.

I am in the exact situation. I am currently looking for a fertility specialist. My husb. had varicocele surgery approx. 3 1/2 mos ago and still nothing. He just returned for follow up semen analysis. I will post the outcome soon. I am keeping my fingers crossed!!

My husband had bilateral varicoceles, & had his surgery 8/21/07. On May 19, 2008, I found out that I am pregnant. I am currently 10 weeks. It took us 8 months. Really 5 months since it takes 3-4 months for sperm to 'normally' form after the surgery. Has your husband had his surgery yet? Good luck.

Keep in mind that it takes about 72 days for sperm to develop. If a surgery was say on Jan 1st, the sperm for Feb & March will still be sperm that was formed before the varicocele was repaired. It won't be until April or May before the sperm is formed "correctly" at the right temperature. Our urologist said there would be no change in the semen analysis from the time of the surgery until 3-4 months after. I would wait a few months before I went & spent tons of money on fertility specilists, especially if it's only been 3 1/2 months. Good luck!!

The varicocele surgery does work, it does not work in all people though. One of the top rated procedures to correct it is the micro-surgical procedure which the doctor uses the operating microscope to ligate the veins but spare the testicular atery. I had a count of 1.5 prior it went to 4.2 million. Its not enough yet, but the doc put me on clomid too. Have to wait to see the affect if it gives me that last edge I need.

They are finding that varicoceles can cause dna fragmentation in the sperm which will cause even ivf/icsi issues. Check out the following link

Yes! We had success!! My husband had his surgery Aug. 21, 2007, and I found out I'm pregnant on May 19th. I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant, so it took us 8 months. Really, 5 months since you don't count the first 3. Good luck to you!
