Concerns about first hydrodistentionI was just diagnosed today (although I have been suffering for at least 3 or 4 years) with IC I am scheduled for my first hydrodistention next Wednesday. I have been reading as much as I can to get an idea about what this might be like, and it seems like this is something that requires several days off of work. Would this be true or can you function normally the next day? I will be off anyway on Wednesday and Thursday, but go back to work on Friday. Can I expect to be dealing with pain/symptoms from this for several days?
Re: Concerns about first hydrodistentionIt's not unusual to have some pain for 24-48 hours. Have your doctor give you a mild narcotic just in case. Celebrex works well to take for a few days. Usually, after a day or so the hydrodistension makes your symptoms lessen.
Re: Concerns about first hydrodistentionI just had my first cysto/hydro 3 days ago and I'm hurting! I was told by others that cramping is normal for up to a week. Also I was told to drink lots of water. I actually felt ok the next day but I'm wondering if I still had a tad of anestetics in my system. I'm doing everything that I normally do but I feel a lot of aching and cramping in my bladder today even with mild narcotics. I will tell you what others told me,"don't over do it" it will only set you back.
Best wishes, Kaylasmom
Re: Concerns about first hydrodistentionI had 2 hydrodistention's done within 3 months of each other. ( 2 different MD's and hospital's). The first one I had I left the hospital and went shopping right after, I had felt that I had nothing done to me. Expect to have blood in your urine for a few days. Unhappy with the results that I had I saw another urologist who suggested we try it again. That time I did have a lot of pain for a few days.. and after leaving the hospital I had to go right home to bed. I did have relieve from the second one, although it only lasted about 4-6 weeks, then all my symptoms were back. Make sure they give you something for the pain.. you can always try tylenol first, but it that doesn't help you will want to have something stronger ( I took Vicodin ).. the last thing you want to worry about is waking up in the middle of the night and not having something for pain. I had mine on a Friday and went back to work on Monday no problem.. just try to rest and don't over extend yourself in the first few days. ( cleaning your house etc..) Good luck to you.. I have had IC for 7 years, and have seen almost a dozen different urologists to try and get results. ( I am only 27 and am very healthy other than this) It's a very hard, depressing disease to live with..don't give up and try anything possible they suggest. Some days will be harder than others..good luck!!
