Foods To Avoid With IC??

Post a new topicby Susan C on Mon Oct 13, 2008 4:12 pm

Hi. Can somebody give me some basic foods to avoid other than the obvious ones, like spicy foods and lots of caffeine? I read somewhere that wheat products were bad for IC and I've been eating a high fiber diet that contains a lot of wheat. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! My urologist gave me a chart that specifically had on it foods to avoid. Some of them were: lima beans, onions, tofu, store-bought tomatoes, aged cheeses, eggs, sour cream, yogurt, and chocolate. Of the Carbs, it said to avoid rye and sourdough breads. Meat/fish category included: aged, cured, canned, processed or smoked meats/ fish, chicken livers, and canned beef.

Hope this is helpful.

Anything with high acidity: coffee, green tea, tomatoes, chocolate, vinegar, citrus fruit. Alcohol used to be fine for me, but now I can't handle it. Anything that ups your hormones will be problematic if you have to much of it--soy products, which raise your estrogen, for example. Apparently rye and sourdough breads are a bad idea for a lot of IC patients. I've also heard pecans and hazelnuts.

when people say that foods bother the ic...what is the time frame that the pain occurs? is this the next day or more immediate?

For me it's generally a few hours later. It depends on whether it's solid or liquid and how long it takes your body to digest it. I find that coffee irritates me the fastest. The pain and discomfort lasts longer if you have a lot of the food or drink. Too much coffee or alcohol one night would have me in agony for the better part of the next morning.
