6cm stone and need advice from others who have done this

Post a new topicby starlit on Thu Apr 24, 2008 5:20 pm

My husband just got told he has a 6cm stone. He spent a night in the hospital for pain and so they could call a doctor to find out what to do for him. (if they need to send him somewere else). He just called me and said the doctor is sending him home with pain pills, pills for imflamation, and something to widden the tube so the stone can pass if needed. My question is Is this normal? Has anyone else had a doctor do this? They want to wait till monday and then talk about the options. I just need peace of mind here. If I should take him in somewere else and get a second opinion I will. I just need to know what to do.

I, too was honored with kidney stones in both kidneys. I was treated in the ER and told to go home and to try to pass the stones without interferring. I was put on Flomax which is a man's drug given to increase urinary flow. The thinking behind this is to dialate the ureters and flush the stones out. Well, mine had spurs on them and refused to come out on their own, so I needed a cysto. I had the cysto and they removed 2 stones that cultured out e-coli and two days later I was in the hospital with sepsis. I was very sick and needed IV antibiotics for 10 days. This is why they want you to pass the stones naturally. There are a lot of complications with going in after them. Hopefully your husband will pass his. It seems to hurt the most when leaving the kidney until it reaches the bladder. Men have a longer urethra so depending on the size of the stone, it may burn. I hope he doesn't need intervention.

Did they give him FloMax? My dr just explained this to me last night. Yes, flomax is for large prostate problems, but it also makes the uretha bigger helping things to pass. He said a lot of the pain is actually from the urine being stuck and being pushed back up. It is stuck because the stone is blocking its exit. I actually have a flomax px waiting for me the next time I am ready to pass a stone along with a viocidan (sp??) px. I am getting them blasted next month though. When I pass the stones during pregnancy, there is really nothihng they can do, but monitor them and put me on antibiotics. Did they give him antibiotics?
