Dealing with stone for 4 weeks......My husband has been dealing with kidney stones for the past 8 yrs. Both sides of his families have history with stones so he was basically cursed at birth! He had a ureterscopy last Nov to remove a 9mm enbedded stone that had been there for over 4 months. This supposive "simple" removal ended him in the hosptial for 4 days due to a irritated ureter because of the stent removal. It took him about 3 weeks to start feeling like himself again. He hadn't had another stone until about 4 weeks ago. He's been to the emergency room 4 times, an URGENT care once, and the urologist twice. His last visit to the urologist was on Tuesday when they reviewed CT scans they'd taken on Monday. Basically after paying a $160 charge for an office visit, the urologist told him the 3mm stone was on the verge of passing, drink plenty of water, blah, blah. We knew that already!! About 4 hrs after he returned home he started having severe pain again which made him sick at his stomach. I called the urologist office to ask if we should come back in and was told that there was nothing they could do for him in the office and if he was in that much pain to the point of it making him sick he needed to go back to the ER. He has done everything they've told him to do and a month later he's still having severe pain. Now he's having problems urinating. He's drinking water and only a small amount of urine comes out at a time. He has the urge to urinate badly but when going to the bathroom he has to strain to release a small amount. He's been reduced to tears because he's in so much pain. Pain that starts at his back and wraps around all the way to his abdomen. His urologist only prescribed him a small amount of pain meds and their not helping anyway. He was back at the ER today for the 5th time and told the same thing over and over again. What's the point of even having a urologist if they can't help you??
Re: Dealing with stone for 4 weeks......If your husband is not urinating, has pain on urination, flank pain, fever of more than 100 degrees, or abdominal pain -- something is wrong. He should have a CT scan, blood work, and an evaluation for a treatment plan. You need to find another doctor for a second opinion and to discuss surgery options. If there is little or no urination. there is risk of infection and sepsis, which can be fatal.
Use clear language with the ER doctor; get the tests ordered and get a referral to a doctor that will listen. Stress that previous treatment has been unacceptable. This is a serious situation -- find a doctor ASAP. You are in my prayers.
