Kidney Stones

My husband has been suffering from kidney stones for the past 8 years. He usually ends up in the ER at least 5-6 times a year, each time he's given pain meds and is told to follow up with a urologist They all have done run tests on his urine and it's due to calicum. So last year he'd been suffering for months with pain and went to the urologist They gave him Flomax and told him to drink plenty of fluids and hopefully he'd pass it and a week later....still there. They decided to go in with a basket to remove it....they orginally thought it was 5mm but found out it was an 9mm stone they become enbedded!! That was back in November and he hadn't had any problems .... then 2 weeks ago he woke up and was having pains. We went to the hospital and they did a CT scan and found he had multiply stones in both kidneys. He's been to the ER twice since then and URGENT care once....he went to see a urologist Monday and was told it looked like a 3mm stone that he shouldn't have any problem passing but he's still having really bad pains and is only able to urinate a tiny bit when he goes to the bathroom.

I was researching online and found a medication called Renavive....it's suppose to be all natural. I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has tried Renavive or any other herbal supplement and been successful?

Haven't used it. however, you can buy AZO Standard over the counter at Walmart for about $6 -- try 2 pills every 4-6 hours. Its the same as Pyridium and helps to anesthetize the urinary tract.

I haven't, but have tried a lots of things. Right now I'm on Kidney Stone Relief, from X-Thera. I also have lots of UTI's and they sell both on the website. I get around 3-4 stones a year but since taking taking it, haven't had a problem yet this year! It's basically lemonade in a pill and that seems to be the only thing that helps.

I've also tried pureed asparagus followed but drinking a coke. i don't know what it was, but had read about it and truly thought that it helped because i passed a stone a few days later.

My belief is prevention is best so I now drink tons of water, and have basically eliminated salt from my diet. Was drinking lemonade all day long until I found above.

If the stone is 9mm, he needs surgery. If there is little urination, he needs to tell the doctor so, in no uncertain terms. Sometimes, there can be multiple stones that look like 3mm from a certain angle, but in reality, the stone can be larger. KUB is not as accurate as a CT. The ureter is 2-3 mm wide -- if his is 2mm, it isn't going to pass. Get another doctor's opinion, if the one he is seeing will not listen. Urologists are incompetent, for the most part, based on the nightmares told here; finding one who listens, is a saint. Try the closest teaching hospital and ask to see the head doctor, not the staff physician. If all else fails, ask your ER to find a urologist for you, or ask for a referral from Patient Referrals or Patient Relations. If you can make a trip to the Urology Clinic of Johns Hopkins University, you will find the #1 team of urologists in the US. I recommend Dr. Brian Matlaga - he is the Director of Stone Diseases, and is a real sweetheart who listens and does the right thing all the time; he background is as a teaching professor, so he really knows this area of expertise.
