Kidney Stone 1.3 cm * .5 cm

Post a new topicby airsonz on Wed May 07, 2008 11:33 am

Respected Sir / Madam,

Yesterday, I Had a sonography for abdominal Pain which occurs once every 2-3 months. The report says that i have a stone (calculus) of 1.3 cm * 0.5 cm in right renel pelvis in kidney. Also, mild hydronephorsis was observed.

Doctor told me to get operated in Mumbai either by lithotripsy or Nephrostolithotomy. He also asked me to get digital x ray as the size of stone is big.

Today, The Digital X ray report say that no abnormalities were observed in kidney as well as abdonem.

Can the stone might be transparent.

What can be done in this case. Can a regular intake of Cystone can dilute the stone over some peroid of time if it exists. Or should I go for surgery.

Please guide me. I will ready be grateful to you forever.

With Regards
Jagiasi Pavankumar M.

i don't have answers to all your ??'s, what i do know is that i had the eswl for a stone that kept trying to pass out of the kidney to the ureter, but was too big. the eswl was a great procedure for me. i also know that my stone was easier to see on some xrays than others. the doctor told me this was because one place had better equipment than the other, this may be why it seems "transparent." there are supposedly some treatments that can help reduce the chances of getting stones, but i don't know if anything will reduce the size of an existing stone. it may depend on the type of stone you have. that's all i got.

Thanks doodle. So I can go for eswl. Is there any risk or side effect associated with it.

Jagiasi,

Was the 'Digital X ray' a CT Scan? If you can afford a CT SCAN, get one. If not, another sonogram is good enough to verify a stone.
You say you get this pain every 2-3 months. How long does it last? On a scale of 1 to 10, how severe is the pain? Are you in pain now? Do you see blood in your urine?

Stones can be transparent. Usually a CT scan will be used. Your stone is large, and is causing fluid to build up in your kidney. Very few stones can be dissolved. Most are calcium and or oxalate and cannot be dissolved, only removed or broken up. Your will have to come out, one way or another. If its deemed too big for lithotripsy, surgery will be required, but its usually a small incision.

A CT scan will give a very good image of your stone, transparent or not..

It is very possible for stones to show up on sonogram and not Xray. I suffer with both uric acid and calcium oxalate stones for years and the uric acid stones will show up on ultrasound and not on xray. Treatment can differ as in some cases medication only is used for uric acid stones. Good luck!

I thought ALL stones showed on a non contract CT scan...Its odd that the first xray showed a large (1.3cm is large) and the "digital" did not...Anything larger than 5 mm is pretty big, I'm currently passing a 7mm and a 4mm, which have both made it into my bladder (i think) No pain for over 2 weeks, but they havent passed yet...

If you DO have the stones, you'll need lithotripsy. I had it twice...If successful the stone will be broken into sand like particles, they will place a stent in your ureter, and you'll pass the sand...I hate stents, they make me feel like I have a UTI, (urinary tract infection) with burning and discomfort, but the docs say the stent stops the ureter from spasming after the trauma of litho,...good luck with your stones.
