My kidney stone story

Post a new topicby cjones on Thu Jul 09, 2009 1:51 am

A little background I am a 26 year old male. I weigh about 200lbs and am 5' 11".

"Well It started about 6 months ago I got a UTI and was treated with anti biotics. Infection went away in 3 days. Well roll on to about 2 months ago I got another UTI whith 1 UTI is uncommon for males and 2 somethings definately up. Well my PCP did a urinalysis and said I had some blood in the urine and an infection. Gave me more anti-biotics and said he guessed I was just unlucky to have 2 UTIs. The infection went away in 5 days this time. So I thought everything was OK. Then it started a dull back pain in my left lower back. I ignored it for a couple of weeks thinking it was something I lifted. Well it started to get worse and my side started hurting. I ended up setting up an appointment with my dr and he thought I had a blockage possibly a stone and prescribed me vicodin also referred me to a Urologist It took another week to get an apoint "UGH the pain" . Well I went to the appointment and I told them the story, the nurse sent me to get some X-rays....no stones. So the doc did some tests and an ultrasound of my bladder and said I wasnt emptying out all the way (even though I went all I could). They acted like it was no big deal and ignored the fact I told them my pain was a 7 on the scale. Nurse told me to take Motrin.....:( . The urologist however did schedule a CT scan of my pelvis and abdomen for another week away (AGAIN THE PAIN!!) Well from this time and then I did pass 2 stones....One about an 1/8 inch by 1/16 inch (3-4mm) and one a bit smaller. THE PAIN WAS INCREDIBLE>>>luckily I had some Percocet from my appendix removal. Well the sharp pains went away but I am still having pretty bad back pain in my left back. I called the Urologist and they said they couldnt prescribe narcotics over the phone without seeing me. Luckily I will be going to have my CT scan Friday and see the Urologist Mon. (5 days of back pain :( ) Does it sound like I could have more stones???? If they all passed would I still have the back pain??? I assume they are uric acid because they didnt show up on the Xray (Wish my urologist would have told me that I may have stones....Im sure the signs are tell tell) I did keep one of the stones its a reddish brown color and has little bumps on it. Should I bring it to the appointment???? Thanks for any responses in advance. I have found this site more helpfult than any of my dr's have been (I just hate reading the horror stories of dr's not prescribing anything for the pain....and from the way the urologist was I went to I will have the same problem....)

Go to the emergency room and tell them what you have said here. My doctors are always offering me pain meds, but I don't take them - I get more relief from Pyridium (2-200 mg tabs every 6 hours) -- you can find them over the counter in any Walmart.

You can always have more stones, and little one can become big ones. An 8mm stone is one-third of an inch, while the average ureter is 2-3mm. I have been told that pain in the kidney is from the stone trying to pass.

You have my sympathy, and I know how you are feeling. You are in my prayers.
