An update on JocelynWell…at Joc’s first appt with the urologist in May, we learned that she had unilateral level 2/3 VUR (L) and her left kidney was smaller than her right (6.6, 7.3). She has been on daily antibiotics now since February. She has frequent daytime wetting accidents (sometimes 3-5 per day!) and gets repeated low-grade fevers. (She is 4 and has been potty trained since 2).
She has been checked for a UA only once since May’s appt and it was negative. Today we went back for our 2nd ren...Read the full article
Re: An update on JocelynHi Denise! Thanks for your response. Actually, Jocelyn has had NO symptoms of a UTI at all. I guess she's had a low-grade fever off-on for months, but with the midwest humidity, I never really put too much stock into that, because when she's sick, her fever spikes to 104-105 and lasts for days. She hasn't had any of that, and no pains, no abnormal or painful urination...nothing that would make me suspect. It's very frustrating to know that she could have possibly had several UTI's without me knowing. We won't see the urologist again until February 2009, so I'm praying that her new meds work this time and without any long-term effects. The dr's office tells me that since her VUR is unilateral, there isn't a lot to worry about because even if something did happen, she can live a normal life with one good kidney. Yeah...a 4 year old's mother LOVES hearing that.

Re: An update on JocelynI was searching the net for info on surgery for VUR etc, I came across this site and your post about Jocelyn. I am sorry you are going thru this but relieved I am not alone. My DD is 4 years old, diagnosed in July with VUR, grade 1 in her left kidney grade 3 in the right. She also has frequent accidents during the day. She is 5.83 in her right kidney 8.something in her left. We just saw the urologist on the 11th. PCP had me thinking he'd just keep her on lowdose antibiotics (which she's been on since June to prevent infection) and they watch a grade 3. The US didn't seem to show scarring, he thought, since it was not mentioned specifically. Well the urologist says the stunted growth in the right kidney is due to scarring. We will have a 2nd ultrasound to make sure but he feels surgery is imminent. I was reading about how those with VUR have to be monitored for life and the risk of kidney malfunction and pregnancy related problems still exists. I just cried!! My baby! So not fair. My urologist also said its no big deal just a 3 hour surgery and overnight stay... and that she can be fine with one kidney as the right will probably not catch up.... I agree with you no mother wants to hear that!!
