12 year old w/ chronic Nocturnal Enuresis

Post a new topicby JeniLeary on Tue Dec 16, 2008 5:43 pm

Hi,

Our 12 year old son has experienced nocturnal enuresis every night with no relief. We have tried medication (nasal spray), alarms, waking at night, reduced fluid intake, behavioral programs, bedwetting books, chiropractic, etc. He has not had one night dry with any of these interventions. He is a very deep sleeper and experienced night terrors when little. He is a very talented athlete and good student but his social life is significantly impacted as he is embarrassed to spend the night at friend's houses or have friends over. The only way he can spend the night is to stay up all night. We are feeling hopeless about helping him - nothing seems to work even though he desperately wants to find a solution. How can we help him? Should he see a Urologist? What could be causing enuresis that does not seem to be impacted by "traditional" interventions?

Hello, Having just read your post I was hoping you'd had some replies to help with your sons dilema. Your description of him sounds exactly the same as my son who is nearly 12. I have read lots and it seems that in order to break the pattern at night you need to change his deep sleeping pattern, but I'm not sure how to do this. As you posted this question some time ago could you tell me if anything has changed and if so how have you changed it. It's the summer holidays in France and he has missed 2 sleep overs already. He is terrified his friends will find out his secret. Grateful for any advice.

My daughter wet the bed nearly every night up until she had a tonsilectomy at the age of eight. It is more than a year later, she has not wet the bed even once since the surgery! Her tonsils and adnoids were both huge per the surgeon, she had strep throat continuously but never showed any symptoms. After six or more months of different antibiotics they did both a tonsilectomy and adnoidectomy. Occasionally you see a note about sleep apnea and bed wetting. I am totally convinced that the removal of the tonsils and adnoids had something to do with her sleep patterns and now she wakes up if she has to go to the bathroom.
