6.5 yr old daughter reflux has returnedHi,
I was wondering if anyone has had experience with a reflux returning much later in their childs life. My daughter was diagnosed with grade 3 reflux in both kidneys when she was 2.5 months old. At 5 months the grade she had a VCUG and it still had not decreased, her doctors had recommended surgery to correct the issue. I chose against the surgery and at 15 months her reflux seemed to be resolving coming down to a grade 1 on the right side and 0 on the left. She had continued on the antibiotics until 3 and then was taken off. For awhile we did very well with no issues such as UTIs or urine incontinence. However she is 6.5 now and she has had multiple UTIs this year, prompting her Urologist to order another VCUG. She had this done on Sept 24 and I was told today that while her left is still resolved. The reflux has returned in her right kidney at a grade 2. I am meeting with her Urologist on Mond Oct 12 to discuss options. I am stressed over what to do. I don't want to do the antibiotic therapy again due to so many drug resistance issues we had before that cause multiple hospitalizations. At the same time I don't want my daughter to have to have surgery but she can't keep having these UTIs. I feel horrible. Any advice? Thank you, Shauna
Re: 6.5 yr old daughter reflux has returnedWow your story is very similar to ours. My DD was diagnosed at 6 weeks (March 2003) with grade 3 bilateral. We chose to do Deflux when she was 2 years old. Only had two infections since then until this year. In July and September she had two horrible infections and ran temps 104 for several days. Our ped's sent us back to her Urologist. We had the Nuclear VCUG today and it is back on the right side. It looks to be about a grade 2 again. I too am torn on what to do now. We are currently going on Septra until May and will make our decision then and do whatever we decide during her summer vacation.
Would love to know your outcome. Abby
