Dilation of Renal PelvisHello my wife is 26 weeks pregnant. And during an ultrasound the doctor noticed clearly a dilation on both of the renal pelvises. The AP diameter of both renal pelvises were approx 13mm. There was also liquid present in the bladder and a normal amount of amnionic fluid. He did an extensive ultrasonic examination of the fetus, and everything else was within the normal regions. The heart was in the higher normal region, so he sent us to the hospital for further exams, suspecting a possible beginning cardiomegaly. The hospital confirmed the dilation of the RP but did not agree with the cardiomegaly suspission and scheduled a follow up exam six weeks from now. The first doctor felt it was probably better with a sooner exam, so he scheduled us for another exam two weeks from now.
My question is, which of the doctors is assessing this condition correct? And also what sort of prognosis(es) can we expect? What sort of treatment/monitoring of this condition would you recommend? As you may understand we are extremely worried and we feel we are provided with so little information regarding this from our doctors, so we hope you might help us shed some light on this subject. Thank you in advance, Espen Sande Larsen
Re: Dilation of Renal PelvisHello,
I'm sure you've had your baby by now. I hope your baby is doing well. I don't have any suggestions (I'm also waiting on a reply from "Urodoc") but just want to tell you to hang in there. We were in a similar situation and may be heading down the surgery route (details are in a post I did earlier). Although surgery scares the heck out of me, I am VERY grateful that this was caught on an ultrasound so that proper monitoring could be done throughout my pregnancy and after. My baby shows no signs of discomfort and we would not know about his dilated kidneys now had it not been for the ultrasound. Hopefully we will be able to get the problem corrected before any damaged is done on his kidneys. Hope you can post an update on here. It's helpful to hear other people's situations and suggestions!
