Grade III reflux: To continue with traditional medicine or

My 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with grade III reflux at 4 months of age when she had her first and only UTI She was immediately placed on bactrim and two years ago we stopped increasing her dose. She's taking 4 cc daily and weighs 36 lbs. We just had confirmation that she has a duplex collecting system on the left. No reflux on the right side, only the left. After the last visit with her urologist last week, the chance of outgrowing her reflux increased from 30 to 50%. We asked if we can stop antibiotics and following her closely with frequent UAs and this strongly discouraged. I was wondering if anyone out there has had a similar experience. Also does anyone know of an outstanding physician in the SF Bay Area in case we seek a second opinion?

I would definitely get a second opinion to have another specialists opinion on the matter. There have been a lot of studies recently debating the use of prophylactic antibiotics for the treatment of reflux and whether or not they are effective.

My daughter has grade 5 bilaterally with duplicated ureters and was started on abx when she was 6 weeks old. After a lot of discussions with various doctors, we suspended her abx about 7 weeks ago (she's 2 now). So far she has done well without the abx, but she does have some other urinary issues that factor into the outcome.

Here is an article with links to studies about antibiotics in relation to reflux. http://www.kidneyreflux.info/ArticleAntibiotics.php

It's a tough call either way. Good luck with your decision!
