"versed"for vcugs

Post a new topicby katie2you on Sat Dec 08, 2007 1:14 pm

Hi again...my son had his test done yesterday. It was so much different than my daughters was I can't believe that anyone ever does it with out sedation! He was prepped for iv with a cream to numb his skin ( which was amazingly enough the worst part) and given versed orally when we arrived. After about a half hour he was groggy, smiling and able to sit on the table for the ultra sound which he previously needed to be held for in my arms kicking screaming and flailing. I talked to him softly and he wiggled a bit but did not cry and the tech was able to go very quickly.
AFter the ultra sound it was time for the Iv. (it was explained to me that the main purpose for the iv is so that if the versed is not enough and the child becomes very distressed during the test, more medication can be give to calm them without having to wait for the oral medication to kick in.) They attempted to start the iv once but there were no veins easily accessable. My son did not even know that the needle was in him. Because they could not start it with out poking him many times they decieded since he was still awake and not quite sedated enough for the test,to give him more versed orally and forgo the iv unless absolutely necessary later on.
He became groggy enough after a few minutes and I was told I could give him his bottle since we would not be using an iv. I was able to place him on the table with his bottle, blanket and a small music box then I had to step out of the room but could watch through the window. He was talked to and comforted, he did not even notice that I was not there. The doctor placed the catheter and he whined and wiggled but did not even cry (me either) and that was the only time he really protested even though he remained awake the whole time.
After they were done I was able to take him right home because he had never really fallen asleep and had had no problems. I was told that he'd probably sleep for a while after we got home but he was only out for about an hour, then he was a bit unsteady for about a half hour. After that he was back to himself..climbing dancing and torturing his sister.
He does not have reflux!!!!
Such a difference...all please concider sedation with versed.
