Reflux grade 4

Post a new topicby Sofia on Fri May 08, 2009 3:09 pm

My daughter was diagnosed with reflux grade 4 at 8wks old. She was hospitalized with IV antibiotics. She since then has been on prophylactic antibiotics and has still had an infection a month ever since her diagnosis (she is now 6 months). Her urologist has decided to now put her on 2 prophylactic antibiotics a day. Her pediatrician agrees with his treatment but I am not at all happy with her urologist Something about him makes me uncomfortable. I want to take her to the best! Does anyone have any recommendations? I will travel anywhere.

My daughter has a similar story. She was diagnosed at 6 wks of age, and had constant infections and hospitalizations. We never tried 2 abx at once, but did try rotating 2 abx every week, without much luck. We eventually decided to have a vesicostomy put in (a urinary diversion through her abdomen) and it has been the only thing to stop the infections.

I would definitely get a second opinion, but too be honest they will probably say about the same thing. My only suggestion might be that you have a urodynamics study done to make sure that the bladder is working properly and not causing problems. I wish we had done this before surgery. Our daughter had the reimplantation at the age of 5 months, and unfortunately the surgery has been unsuccessful (probably b/c of bladder problems and young age) and she continued to have infections. It wasn't until the vesicostomy that her infections stopped. It's not a permanent fix, but is giving her time to be healthy and grow.

Hope that helps some!
