VUR TreatmentMy son is diagnosed with VUR grade IV on right kidney. However left kidney is working perfectly.
I came to know that for treatment of VUR there are 2 methods 1. Ureter reimplantation (surgery) 2. Injection of collagen He is just 1yr & 4 months old. Can anyone tell me which one would be best? Will reflux recur even after performing any of the above procedures? Please let me know.
Re: VUR TreatmentHi,
I am new to this site as I was wondering about VUR treatment for my 2.5 year old son. Did you go ahead with any treatment and if so I would be grateful for more info as my urologist recommends my son goes ahead with endoscopic surgery to correct the issue Thanks
Re: VUR TreatmentCan I just say that I know where you are comming from my daughter has grade 5 VUR on the left side since she was born. We waited til she got older and we had surgery when she was 6 months old. I know that the chances of the collagen working effectivly decreases with the grade of VUR. It is recomended for children with grades 1-3 and has high sucess rates. But for children with higher grades 4-5 it is less effective. With surgery the success rates are 85-99% Much higher.
It is rare but my daughter is now 3 and her VUR is back on the same side. And to top it all off it's grade 5 again. We are waiting to hear from the specialist to see why it is back and what he recommends. But keep in mind my daughter has posterior urethral valves, ureterocele, or ureter duplication. I hope that this helps you out a little. And I hope that it all works out for you and your son! Good Luck
Re: VUR TreatmentHi there, I am not sure if you have already decided on a treatment for your son, but I will say this my daughter was born with grade 3 VUR in both kidneys and I decided against the doctor to do the surgeries. She was diagnosed at 2.5 months old after suffering from an infection in both kidneys that spread to her spine. While it was a difficult decision, especially since I knew of no one who was going through this I don't regret my decision. My daughter had VCUG at 5 months and it was still grade 3 at 15 months it was grade 1 and it is now resolved. She is still suffering from UTIs and I fear her reflux may be returning but with less severity to it that she was born with. The surgery is successful with children who have grade 1-3 but there isn't any research I found that says if you do the surgery that the reflux will not return later on, so if you do the surgery there isn't any guarantee the condition won't show up again so it really is a tough decision to go with, I just wanted to let you know that the doctors aren't always right and to go with your gut feeling. I chose not to do the surgeries because it was a risk I didn't feel was justified when the doctors couldn't guarantee me it would be gone. I wish all the best to you and your family.
Re: VUR Treatmentmy son has VUR.grade v.he is 7 months old.bloodwork shows his kidney function is good.his left is large right is smaller. he had a repair of urethra and an obstruction in left kidney. still huge.he is on antibiotics and they are just following up with ultrasounds.last week they noticed a lot of depris in his left and changed his antib. today it looks clear of infection.but they tell me he is at great risk for infection.he never presents being sick so i have to catch his pee to be sure he doesnt have infect. they want to intervene when he's older or unless he keeps getting infect. i know this doesn't answer your question but i know how you feel.
