8yo,recurring UTI,all tests neg. what next? Help!8 year old daughter. Recurring UTI (pain upon/after urination, hard to go, pressure, slight fever). After the last one, we had a kidney ultrasound (normal) and a test (forgot the name), where she had a catheter inserted and 2 bottles of clear dye. This was an xray test for reflux, but it didn't show any reflux. She actually tolerated the catheter fine, it was just the pressure of the fluid and having to try and urinate while lying down - that caused her the most discomfort. Trust me, I heard all the horror stories of giving such a young girl a catheter test, but she did okay.
This weekend, she complained again of bladder infection. She doesn't have a noticable odor on her panties and she does run a slight fever. She doesn't take baths (just showers, since she was first told at age 3! that this would help. And, she wipes correctly. What I think was important, was that this was the second time that I noticed a small tissue-like clump in the potty. It was small and white to clear with a pink tinge. Could she be having pain trying to "pass" this tissue clump? I havent' been to a pediatric urologist just my pediatrician. And I don't want to be over alarmed or over eager for more procedures. I dont' want to prescribe too many antibiotics, I just want to find the cause. Any suggestions appreciated.
Re: 8yo,recurring UTI,all tests neg. what next? Help!Hi, I really hope that this post isn't too late to help her. Most of the time, anti-biotics given to resolve a UTI are either (Trimethoprim/ Amoxicillin/ Nitrofurantoin) only effective against 40% of the most common bacteria (e.Coli) that cause UTIs, or (Ciprofloxacin) cause some serious long term damage to the joins and bones, and even have known side effects such as "Death on first dose".
Also you will often find that anyone who uses a Catheter will be in a very high risk category of introducing new bacteria that can actually make things much worse. I'd been suffering from UTIs for a few years, and when out on a day in Manchester I came across a doctor (Denis 'The Chemist' Gore) who had a health products store and after some time chatting to him he introduced me to one of the product that he stocked called 'Waterfall D-Mannose'. It's a natural product that causes the bacteria to attach to it instead of the mannose that is naturally present in the bladder. So when you urinate, the bacteria is flushed out of your body. Since I was by that time very fed up of taking anti-biotics, I gave it a try. After about a week I'd got rid of any problems I had and haven't had an attack since. I currently order it online since I don't live in Manchester, but it's been a real turning point in my life. Other things that will help are if you can keep her OFF anything that has an acidifying effect on the urine such as Cranberry, Orange, Meats (especially red meats), fatty foods, and non-buffered Vitamin C tablets etc. (I'd usually slip in to stay off alcohol here too, but I'd imagine she's not by any means a heavy drinker :D) I really hope that this information is useful to you. Send your daughter my love. Chiyaki x
