DEALING WITH DADS AGGRESSIVE PROSTATE CANCER

Post a new topicby livingwith on Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:33 pm

My dad has just been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer he is 72. It has spread to his lymph nodes and may have spread to his bones. We find out next week. He has just started hormone injections, taken every 3 mths and will start radiation in a month. Can anyone let me know if they know of someone going through a similar type of cancer. I am finding it very hard to cope with this diagnosis and would like to know what is the best way I can deal with this.

My Dad also has aggressive prostate cancer, diagnosed 2006. He had gotten to the point where he had extreme pain in his back before he was diagnosed. The cancer was in his bones. He was in bad shape and had lost a lot of weight. Then he started hormone therapy, which made a dramatic turn around for him. It stopped the progression of cancer, he gained back his weight and strength. That gave him another two years of good living. He did not have radiation at that time. He is 83 years old. After two years of hormone therapy, his cancer returned with a vengeance. He got radiation on one area of the back where he had great pain. That helped. He was then put on chemo drugs, but got too sick on them and had to stop, since they were not helping anyway. He is now wheelchair bound, and very weak. He is under hospice care. It's a wrenching disease, but treatment can extend life for a few more years. I hope for the best for your Dad.

My father is 75 years old and is currently battling prostate cancer that has metastasized to his entire skeletal. Hospice is coming in tomorrow. It rips my heart out to see him in this condition/pain. I was wondering if you know about how much more time he has? I know that everyone is different, but when it has progressed to their entire skeletal, I would think that most will have about the same time.

My Dad died March 2, 2009 after my post of Feb 28th having fought the prostate cancer for two years under hormone therapy. He was under home hospice care for two weeks. He met his new great granddaughter the week before he died. He was aware and smiling at the baby, but extremely weak. He acted confused at times. He died peacefully during the night. I'm afraid there's not much time left to love your Dad.
