Blood in Semen and Elevated PSA

Post a new topicby plywoodkd on Wed Oct 24, 2007 10:32 pm

All,

I am a 42 year old male with a history of a one cancer scare. This resulted in a Right Testicle I/O last Feb which resulted in an Adenomatoid Benign Tumor and no future follow up.

Well I have had no problems until recently. I had a some blood in my semen (reddish tint, no spotchy). I suspected it was a hematospermia but wanted to get it checked out anyway. I thought maybe it was related to my previous I/O.

My urologist agreed with the hematospermia suspicion. He conducted a rectal prostate check and sent me to the lab for a PSA just to be safe. BTW, He said my Prostate felt normal

Well in short he called be back two hours later and said my PSA was high (3.75). He immediately put me on Antibiotics (Cipro) for 30 days and wanted to retest the PSA in 30 days. Meanwhile, I was to check my semen a few times as well. Well, I checked it the same evening following the test and it was very bloody (splotchy) unlike the first time.

Of course, I'm freaking out a bit. I went to see me GM today anyway to get some annual blood work. We discussed what was going on.

He said that doing the rectal prostate check first can raise the PSA significantly. He always recommends the PSA test first followed by the prostate check (finger).

In addition, he said that I may have a blockage or infection that could raise my PSA. I really have no other symptoms. I urinate quite frequently due to drinking alot of liquids. I have no burning. I do have some dull pain, but I think I may be paranoid.

Any insights to all of this would be appreciated
