Is a biopsy very painfull durring or afterwards

Post a new topicby chuckycheeze on Wed Sep 17, 2008 3:22 pm

Hello
I know the main pain is the mental anquish of waiting for the results but my question is --
I am age 74 , I never had a biopsy
I may need a biopsy -
I heard it was kinda painfull ?
Is this true or what ?
I guess its not painfull durring the biopsy process because they probably knock you out with anesthesia ?
but how long afterward when you go home to rest is it very painfull after its finished ?
I suppose they give you oral pain medication like vicoden or something right ?
Thank You for your time and effort , its greatly appreciated
Chuck

It isn't so much the biopsy that's uncomfortable as moving the tube around the instrument is inserted through . The procedure only takes 10-15 minutes . The urologist told me some people feel they will need anesthesia and have the procedure done in the hospital . Others feel they can handle it with a sedative and it is done in the doctor's office . I opted for the latter . The doctor gave me a valium and antibiotic and told me to take them and have an enema an hour before my appointment . My wife drove me to and from the office .
For the biopsy you lie on your side in a fetal position . The nurse kept her hand on my ankle so I suspect some people may have kicked during the procedure . They took ten samples . It wasn't very painful . When they were done the nurse told me to rest a couple of minutes then she helped me sit up and checked how I was feeling . I was o.k. but she said they have had people pass out . I guess it depends on each individual's tolerance .
I'm a 58 year old truck driver . I went back to work the following day . I experienced a little blood in my urine and quite a bit in my semen but that's normal .

Based on your posting date you probably already had your biopsy. I'll post my experience here for others to consider:

I was not offered anethesia or a sedative (valium) but was given a local through a needle in the rectum area. This was uncomfortable. As far as the biopsy itself, the probe for the ultrasound and through which the biopsy gun is attached did not hurt but I have to say the biopsy itself was fairly painful. They took 12 samples and it was enough to make you jump and grab your crotch (don't laugh). You are on your left side in the fetal position. The Dr. said most people don't have pain and it doesn't bother them. I guess I'm in the minority but it was pretty painful.

I rested a few minutes on the table and then was given towels, wash cloth to clean up with. Wipe the blood off your backside. Then I was asked to pee in a cup to get the blood clots out of the urethra and there were probably 4 or 5 of them. Then get dressed and sign out.

It is uncomfortable for the first 4 or 5 hours but not terribly painful. You can still feel it over the next day or 2 but it doesn't keep you from walking around --- just no stenous activity. After 5 days I didn't know I'd had it except for blood in the semen. The blood in the urine only lasted the day of the biopsy.

The biopsy is not very bad at all. To me a DRE is worse than the biopsy. Most doctors do not give anesthesia. If you are really nervous about the biopsy, your doctor may give you a sedative. Just talk to him. My biopsy went well. It did not last very long. He took 12 samples. Afterwards, no problems at all. To me the thought of the biopsy was worse than the real thing. Don't worry, you will be fine.

I had a valium an hour prior, then he gave me a local, it was a shot, it hurt. Then I felt nothing. He took 12 samples. It's not a great experience, I was a bit sore later, but what can ya do??

I am 59 yrs old and had my prostate removed on Dec. 18.

The biopsys were not really that painful. 14 needle biopsys were taken. The process is uncomfortable because they have to in thru the rectum. The actual biopsys were a little painful for the instant of each biopsy but I felt no residual pain afterwards.

You won't like it but it not that bad.

Good Luck.

Just had a biopsy done and it was a breeze. Never felt a thing. Doc gave IV sedation like for a colonscopy and it was over in 15 minutes. I woke up and was amazed it was over. No pain after. Bloody urine and stool.
