Prostate Gland Removal - Full or Partial? My father (now 73) was diagnosed with prostate cancer 3 years ago, which led to the subsequent removal of his prostate. After three reasonably comfortable years (although still problems passing water), he is back in hospital, where he has had to be catheterized.
My family and I recently learned from my father that they did not remove the entire prostate during surgery 3 years previously. Now it seems that the small portion, which remained, has led to the recurrence of a tumour. Can anybody tell me whether or not it is usually standard practice to remove the entire prostate during surgery?
Re: Prostate Gland Removal - Full or Partial? It is standard practice to remove the entire prostate for prostate cancer. Removal of part of the prostate is for obstruction. He may have had obstruction and had a TURP and when the tissue removed was checked by the pathologist cancer was found, this is usually A1 disease.
Re: Prostate Gland Removal - Full or Partial? When looking into all the protate cancer treatments several years ago, I was told that the entire prostate gland was eliminated; surgery, radiation, etc. I have just posted a similiar question about HIFU on this concern.
