Urine Retention/Prostate Cancer

Post a new topicby Guest on Sun Jun 03, 2001 12:12 pm

In May of 2000, my f0ar experiencing urine retention. I took him to emergency room doctors immediately carized him. My far relieved. I immediately made an appointment to see an urologist. I explained situation to urologist she immediately gave him medication called Cardura (3 weeks). After three weeks, she removed cater. my far still could not urine on his own. She n decided to take furr tests diagnosed him prostate cancer She started treatment hormone rapy (to shrink enlarged prostate) continued to give my far cardura hoping both treatments would alleviate his urine retention. urologist wanted to wait to see how medication would work to avoid surgery (prostate scraping). Untunately, medication did not work. Also during time he had surgery kidney stones where after surgery he got a bacterial infection in his blood where he hospitalized 3 weeks. After he recovered, my far began radiation rapy 7 weeks hormone rapy (once a month). His psa dropped dramatically from 22.6 to 2.4. I happy now re's anor problem. Every since he finished radiation rapy, his blood count (hemaglobin) had dropped 10 points continues to drop. We have seen a hematologist. She took special tests to determine cause of infection. (please note during all time, my far still has indwelling cater, urologist warned us after a certain amount of time infection will arise). Macrobid Cipro has been given to my far. he still gets fever, chills, now has loss of appetite, is pale, his weight has decreased. hematalogist would like to do a bone marrow to determine cause of infection, since all or special tests show everything is normal. She also suggested my far should received a blood transfusion; it will make him feel better. I not too happy to hear of because I do not like blood transfusions, even though all blood tests screened I have my doubts. Would a hematologist recommend type of procedure in a situation like ? I plan to get a second opinion in mean time I want to be sure I am making appropriate decision my far. Please I do apologize lengthy comment/question. I want to be sure I receive correct answer. Please advise. My time is running short.

If all other tests are negative for infection then a bone marrow would be indicated to try to rule out a infection in the marrow. Since his hemoglobin is dropping the bone marrow will also help to try to establish the cause. In regards to transfusion I would agree that if he is symptomatic and the hemoglobin is less than 10 a transfusion would be appropriate. Thank you for using oncologychannel and good luck.
