Watchful waiting too long?

Post a new topicby SusanWh on Tue Sep 01, 2009 8:23 pm

My husband is 61; Gleason 6; smooth prostate; He is electing to watch with monitoring - psa has dropped slightly over past few months.
His oncologist recommends treatment, but is not emphatic about it. Has agreed to watchful waiting. My concern is that one day it will be "oops" too late for surgery now. I can't understand risking having a more advanced cancer in his 70's vs. taking care of it all now. Women can't really relate to this. I have many women friends who have taken their breasts off rather than risk further breast cancers. I'd rather have my husband into his 80s and 90s without erections than lose him or see him go through horrible treatments . Of course, it's his choice - but he sleeps at night as he goes from check up to check up. I do not.

I had a Gleason 6 score as well and elected to have it taken care with radiation (IMRT) with "Calypso" inplants. Out of all of the options, that offered me the least detour to my lifestyle. Though ultimately it was no picnic, it appears I'm cancer free after 40 treatments that were completed on July 27th, 2009. As far as potency, I'm still not sure about that. I'm still trying to determine how much it affected me or if it has at all. I wish he and you the best of luck. Please feel free to ask me anything about this.
