In Pain, Need Advice Please!

Post a new topicby Fordtruck on Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:42 am

Hi,
I am 44 yrs old, have had high BP for 20 yrs, sometimes take Viagra for ED caused by BP meds. About 4 weeks ago I noticed myself going to urinate much more often, pain during and after from deep inside. The next time I had an orgasm it was Very painful. Told my wife about it, made appointment with UR doc. I also felt uncomfortable sitting on hard chairs, sometimes felt as if a ping pong ball had grown up inside rectum. Doc asked me for all symptoms, I added no energy, very little interest in sex. He ordered a urine check, it was clean, did prostate exam, very painful. He said it was enlarged and soft in the middle. Seemed to take 4 or 5 hours to forget about that discomfort. He gave me Levaquin samples of 750 mg for 7 days and script for 500 mg for 10 more days. Samples are gone as of yesterday, I seem to be no better, RX wants $60.00 for 10 Levaquin pills. They said Cipro was a comprable and was only $10.00 since generic. My questions...will having orgasm's speed up recovery since it cleans things out? How long till meds show signs of helping? Do you think Cipro is just as good as Levaquin? I am tired of feeling bad like this all the time. Any advice is welcomed. Thanks

Hey,
I am 48 and have had very similar symptoms. In May of 2008, I felt pain in my prostate area (between the nuts and rectum). It was hard to sit without discomfort. It felt like I was sitting on a rock. I was given Cipro (10 days), then Levequin for about 7 days, and the problem came back, so I got back on the cipro for a week until the problem just didn't get better. I finally told my urologist to give me the Levequin again. I stayed on it for another 40 days and the problem seemed to finally go away. My PSA had gone from .3 the prior year to 3.5, then to 3.87 and after being on Levequin for a month it went to 3.0 which gave me some mental relief. We all can feel when something is wrong down there and immediately think the worst. I am no different. But on January 6th I could tell something was not right again. I went to my family doctor and my PSA was 4.1. I then went to my Urologist 3 days later and a DRE showed no signs of knots or hardness. The culture of the milking my prostate showed no infection, but he said the three days that I was on the Levequin may have masked the infection. Two weeks later, he looked into my bladder (that really hurt) with no evidence of problems there. My PSA this time was 4.06. I'm having a biopsy in three days. I have continual pressure between the legs. I sit with my legs as far apart as possible to reduce the discomfort. Not only do I not look forward to the biopsy, but waiting for the results will be agonizing. Not knowing is the worst part. You never mentioned your PSA numbers. I suspect your doctor took blood for this purpose. I would keep an eye on that number. As far as Cipro and Levequin, most doctors issue Levequin. Google it. I feel that the levequin helped me more than the cipro.

I am new to this site. I am 50 and I can identify with alot of your story. I have now been on Cipro for nine weeks. During that time I've had one period of 8 days of reduced pain than in early June a period of 12 days of being almost pain free. The pain always comes back and the last week has been painful again.
I've gone to the health store and gotten a potent saw palmetto, quercetin, acididopolus, garlic pills and a host of other pills. I've recently read that Quercetin does not go well with Cipro and may diminish the antibiotic. Flomax has helped void my bladder better but has not decreased the pain.
My favorite activity is power-walking and I've basically given that up for the last five weeks.
I feel that after all this time and money spent I've seen very little results.
I am thinking it may be time to leave this urologist and get a second opinion or maybe as you stated change to Levaquin which is greatly more expensive but I need to do something proactive to get rid of the pain.
