Semen culture

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Nov 06, 2002 4:03 pm

I have been suffering from urinary problems for about 8 months and I have been to the urologist a few times. He thinks it is Prostatitis (No sure of the spelling) I have classic symptoms such as feeling of fullness, irritated urethra, and other minor symptoms. The last time I went to Urologist he suggested a semen culture, which we did. I ended up with Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus faecalis bacteria found in it. He did say one of them could have been normal for it to be found since it could have been contaminated. As for the other bacteria he said it wasn't so normal. He put me on Trimox 500MG 3 times a day for 10 days since the test provided which antibiotic it was not resistant to it. I am half way through it and I still don't feel better yet. I understand that these things are difficult to get corrected and I can be patient. I am just a little nervous about it. After reading many Internet sites I am a little concerned about STD that are bacterial. Would this culture test find bacterial STD's? I am going to assume yes since they are looking for bacteria. Under the test name on the results I got back it is "Culture, Fluid, MISC". I did ask the doctor if it looked like anything venrial that could be between my girlfriend and me and he said no. I have read postings where people have exchanged bacteria that are not considered an STD so I also asked him to write a script for my girlfriend too. He said if she was OK with it he would. She has no symptoms but she agreed so we are both on the Trimox and not having sex while we are taking it. I understand that we should be using condoms and we are now using them so I do not need the lecture on using condoms I guess my main question is would this culture test find STD's? Thanks

I would think you are fine. A longer course of antibiotics may be necessary, however, if the infection is within the prostate. As you say, it can take some time for these things to improve. If you don't feel better at the end of the treatment, tell your doctor. You might ask for 30 days of Cipro or Levaquin in that case, as they are effective in penetrating the prostate and should also be effective against staph and Enteroccocus.
