Vesicovaginal Fistula

Post a new topicby Guest on Mon Nov 05, 2001 7:49 pm

I had a hysterectomy on 09/04/01. A couple of weeks later, I had wet the bed and from then on, I had to wear Depends AND a pad 24/7 for a few weeks. I finally went back to the doctor, and had a cystogram done which came back positive for a vesicovaginal fistula. It was repaired on 10/26/01. I have a catheter and will have to have it in for at least another week. Talk about MISERY. Anyhow, my question is, what caused this hole in my bladder and who is to blame?

Such fistulae are a very common complication of hysterectomy. Fortunately they are reparable. It sounds like yours should be only a bad memory soon.

Another Question about Vesicovaginal Fistula..THE REPAIR JOB

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Nov 07, 2001 4:56 pm

A couple of questions about the "post" repair job. I have a constant pain in the lower right area of the abdomen. Even with the catheter in, I'm also passing urine the normal way (just a little, with the majority still going into the tube). When I wipe, there is "pink" blood, I'm guessing from the catheter. I've bothered my doctor and he says it's fine. As for the pain, he said it's to be expected. Is this right? Only 3 more days before the catheter is to be removed (HOPEFULLY). When it is removed, what should I expect of this repair job? Should I be concerned about anything afterwards? Thanks in advance!!!! Still Miserable :)

Please be patient with whatever happened. I had a hysterectomy 2 years ago, and a couple of months later a bladder sling surgery. You can expect to have some pain and some bleeding with both. I also had a device inserted into my bladder after my sling surgery, which would empty my bladder after I had gone on my own. Since my surgery, I have had some ongoing problems. (I also have to wear Depends). However, this is being resolved little by little. As I said before, please be patient with your doctor(s). They will be much more likely to listen to you that way.

Vesicovaginal Fistula..THE SECOND REPAIR JOB

Post a new topicby Guest on Sat Dec 08, 2001 7:19 am

Hi, it's me again. I am still with Foley cath after 6 weeks post bladder surgery. I had a reprieve from it for about 2 hours on 11/28, only to discover there is still leaking/hole. I will be scheduled for 2nd repair job week of 17-20, but am so scared. Why is this happening? Doctor is suspecting I am having a hard time with the sutures not dissolving which in turn is causing me these problems. Does this sound right? My doctor and his urologist will be doing the surgery. In the meantime, I am so depressed, irritable, and frustrated. What should I do? Will there be any problems from having this Foley cath in for so long? Looking at least another 4-6 weeks with it in (including after surgery).

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would not worry about the Foley as it usually takes years to develop serious complications. Hopefully, a combined surgical approach will get your fistula fixed permanently.

I am post hysterectomy and developed a vesicovaginal fistula. I am going in for surgery to repair it. The urologist is wanting to try a new procedure on me using fibrin glue. How sucessful is this procedure? Do you have to have cathaters after this glue procedure?

Sorry, but I do not have any experience with fibrin glue under these circumstances, however there have been several successful reports published in the last several years.
I suspect a catheter will be required after such a procedure, however.
