Chronic UTI's after TransplantI had a renal transplant 5 1/2 years ago and ever since then I have had chronic UTI's Just since May I have spent 4 weeks in the hospital. My Nephrologist and Urologist have finally agreed to do a test where I am put to sleep and the go up the ureters to my native kidneys and take a sample from each one to see if they are causing all the infections. If they are they will remove them. My question is does anyone know what the test is called? I am aware and have asked many questions and am comfortable with having the test I just never asked what it was called.
The test is Monday and I am a little nervous. I like to research everything on the internet but can't without the name.
Re: Chronic UTI's after TransplantIt may go by different names depending on exactly what they plan to do. Retrogrades woudl be one where contrast or "dye" is put up the ureters to see them and teh insides of the kidneys. Ureteroscopy is when they use a scope to look up into the kidneys, or urethral washing where they put catheters up the ureters into teh kidneys and sample teh urine coming form the kidneys. If it all proves negative you might consider being put on Macrodantin 100 mg every night, Good Luck.
Re: Chronic UTI's after TransplantThanks! I think it is the washing. I have had the others already. I am not able to take Macrodantin because my kidney function is not strong enough. I have been doing home antibiotics (through a PICC). I have become resistant to just about everything. The last two I was on were Ertipenum and Daptomycin. They are two very strong antibiotics and they didn't even lower the bacteria count. I did a three week course of each. I am allergic to cipro, gent, and vanco. My Drs are as frustrated as I am. Since the transplant I have been on Bactrim DS daily as a preventitive measure and it has not done anything.
I am hoping it is the native kidneys and that removing them will be the magic cure!!
