Chronic UTI's

Post a new topicby Guest on Wed Jul 28, 2004 5:06 pm

I have been suffering from chronic UTI's for the last few years. I am 35. Nothing about my personal history has changed. They do seem to be brought on by sex with my husband, although it wasn't always this way. I don't get them every time we have sex, but I would say at least once a month, I get an infection. This started several years into our marriage.

My regular dr referred me to a urologist after reviewing my medical records and seeing that he had treated me for 9 infections in the previous year.

The urologist has since performed 2 urethra dilations under general anestesia. I had relief for approx 6 months after each procedure. Then began getting monthly infections again.

It's been 7mo since my last dilation, and I had my first infection just about a month ago. He then dilated me in the office, but it doesn't seem to have been effective, as I have yet another infection.

This infection is different. I have back pain and nausea associated with it. I go back to his office on Friday.

The same thing has happened to me! My urologist says I have an irritation inside my bladder (trigone region) which makes it easier to contract infections. He put me on a daily 100mg dose of Trimethoprim (an antibiotic), cranberry pills, and gave me a Silva treatment (instillation of silver nitrate into the bladder). My infections have cleared up and the irritation cleared up for several months. The irritation has come back now (I think due to my having had recent hysterectomy), so I'm going in for more instillations. Re: sex as a trigger for the infections: that was my problem as well. I was advised to make sure to wash beforehand, empty bladder after (to flush out bacteria), use lots of lubricant (KY).

I have been suffering almost monthly for the past 13, 14 years with UTI's! I am sick of taking cipro! Ever since my hysterectomy 17 years ago, it triggered it. I never knew what they were before? Many of my co-workers would complain and be drinking cranberry juice. I had no clue to what it was/ Little did I know I would suffer (Now probably the rest of my life) I do all the right things, drink the cranberry juices, the water, clean myself to obession(no soaps, perfumes, etc,)..I recently went to a gyn-urologist for help. Had all the tests done..urodyamics..etc..Was put on vesicare..Here I go again, same thing all over..back to cipro and the pyridian. I hate it. Any suggestions?
