Ciprofloxacin used for bladder infection causing insomnia

Post a new topicby foggysail on Sat Mar 07, 2009 4:06 am

I was scheduled for back surgery for a disc which was cancelled because the lab found I (male) had a bladder infection. I was given on Monday 23 February a ciprofloxacin prescription. The dosage was two 500 mg tablets/day for 5 days, Friday 27 March I took the last of the medication. Returned to the hospital on Monday 2 March for the surgery whcih was cancelled because my back pain was gone!!! I believe much of the pain I had was caused by the bladder infection. But I had problems urinating over that the weekend prior to the scheduled surgery on 2 March. I had NO insomnia problems while taking this medication the first time

I went to my local doctor on Tuesday and explained the pain I was in not beiing able to urinate normally. My doctor re-prescribed the ciprofloxacin which I have taken now for 4 days. Now I cannot sleep! It is 2:55AM as I type.

I want to STOP taking the ciprofloxacin so I can sleep! But tomorrow is Saturday and I will not be able to contact my regular doctor who gave me my last prescription.

My problem--- If I stop the ciprofloxacin I run a risk the urinary infection may spread to a kidney. Note, my urinary problem seemed to clear almost immediately after retaking ciprofloxacin this last time. So far I have taken ciprofloxacin 5 days followed by a 3 day stopage followed next by 4 additional days with the re-prescribed ciprofloxacin.

Are there other things I can take to make sure my infection gets cured completely? I have to get some sleep!

Thanks in advance to all who offer suggestions.
