UTI treatments before antibiotics were invented?

Post a new topicby Juliedealer on Tue Jan 08, 2008 3:09 pm

How were UTI's treated before the discovery of antibiotics?

I find I'm having recurring UTI's (like most of the folks reading this forum) I am uninsured so seeing a Dr. plus the cost of the lab tests is very costly.

How are they treated in 3rd world countries where physiscians and antibiotics aare not commonly available? How were they treated in pre-antibiotic days?

To the previous poster, thats exactly what I was going to say. Or, they were treated but the treatment wasn't necessarily effective. Don't believe that just because it was done a certain way in the past, that that way was better than what is available now. Google books has old textbooks describing horrendous painful and ineffective treatments for "women's ailments" if you are interested you can search for it, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are at all squeamish. It's worth the money to prevent a kidney infection and possible death.

Here is an example of what I mean. The case of Mary David, aged 28 which can be read at the bottom of page 493. She had other medical problems at the time but the lack of correct treatment of her UTI no doubt contributed to her miscarriage and subsequent death.
