acute urinary retention

help anyone who knows anything about this condition.

i am a 51 yr old male and i recently had surgery on my heart. when i woke after surgery i had a catheter which had been placed sometime when i was under anesthesia after it was removed it was difficult to urinate and the stream was weak. my whole groin area was badly bruised. my testicles were swollen and i was told by my surgeon they had run a line through my groin in case of an emergency during surgery. four days after my stomach became swollen and i was unable to urinate at all. i went to the er and had a catheter placed. they removed 68 oz. of urine from my bladder. five days later while still catheterized, i saw a urologist. the urologist did many test and told me i would now have to do self catheterization. i am still wondering what happened and if this condition is permenant or will correct itself. does anyone have any knowledge of what this could be? i am not sure if i have had some trauma during surgery, if this is nerve damage or muscle damage and if i will be like this permenantly. thanks for any info, rod v.

I read your post and i was just curious what you found out about your condition. I also recently underwent surgery and had a catheter placed. I am a 22 year old female. After surgery, i suffered the same problems but my retention was caused from extremely large blood clots in the bladder. I am also on some medication that has urinary retention side affects. I have also been told that swelling and bruising and nerve damage from surgeries can cause those same problems. What did you find out?
