blood in urine with no painmy husband recently had a large amount of visible blood in his urine with no pain. He went to the our family doctor, who confirmed it was indeed blood, and sent him for a ct scan. The scan came back negative. He then sent us to a urologist for a cystoscopy The exam with the urologist was over a week later and he still has blood in his urine (although no longer visible to the naked eye) The urologist performed the scope and did not see any stones, small tumors, or anything out of the ordinary. He ordered a urine cytology to check for a presence of cancer cells. My question is - If there were no visible tumors or growths identified on the other test, why would cancer cells be present? I am sure there is a simple answer, I was just to thrown by the wording to ask at the time. My husband is only 36 years old. He did smoke for a number of years (probably 15) but hasn't smoked for the last 7 years. He also has had 1 episode of kidney stones (14 years ago) He has a strong family history of type 2 diabetes. Recently, I have noticed that he his extremely tired, and he gets up during the night to use the restroom. He says that he will go at least every 90 minutes at work during the day.
Re: blood in urine with no painThe cytology will help rule out cancer that might be in the ureters (tubes between the kidneys and bladder) since it the same type of lining as the bladder, if the area is small it might not be picked up on x ray. Given your husbands smoking(leading cause of bladder cancer) history they are being thorough, good luck
Re: blood in urine with no painThank you so much for your quick response! I am definately not complaining about the test being done. I had just already in mind ruled out cancer, when our doctor didn't see anything with the other 2 test. So when he said the "C" word (it is a dirty word in our family- my mother is fighting renal cell, and my best friend is fighting breast cancer - both are blessed with a fighting spirit and good doctors) Anyway, when he said that, my mind literally blinked for a minute. I didn't think to ask him what I didn't understand.
Thank you so much!
