This urinary hesitation is getting annoying...

Post a new topicby Guest on Tue Apr 16, 2002 3:41 pm

Monday morning of last week, I woke up with the urge to urinate, went into the bathroom, and found that I physically couldn't, despite the intense urge to empty my bladder. Since then (8 days) I am unable to urinate without sitting on the toilet and practicing relaxation technigues for several minutes while enduring the intense sensation of the urge to urinate. The night before this problem started I was given prochlorperazine by suppository to control vomiting that was accompanied by fever, and I received a single 25 mg dose. Difficulty urinating is listed as an unlikely side effect for this medication, but it seems to me that by now any side effect from a medicine shouldn't have persisted this long. I am an otherwise healthy 25 year old female and have never had any problem with urinary hesitation before.

I went to several doctors last week to receive treatment for the hesitancy, and had three urine tests and cultures, all of which didn't reveal any infection. However, I was prescribed Cipro to treat what all three doctors decided MUST be an infection. It was also determined that I was suffering from bladder retention, as I had 80 mLs of urine left in my bladder after urinating.

Last Friday, it finally happened where I absolutely couldn't urinate despite the obviously full bladder, and I rushed to the urologist He dilated my urethra slightly (ouch!!!) with the statement that he planned to do the complete dilation over 2 visits , inserted a catheter and said I had urethral stenosis. The urologist verified yesterday (Monday) that I am no longer retaining urine (residual was 15 mLs), didn't do the second dilation, and declared me "cured". However, the hesitancy has not gone away in the four days since the dilation, and it is interfering with my life since I can't seem to urinate without extreme quiet and relaxation - hard to come by in public restrooms. The urologist said he can dilate me more, but that overdilation might cause scarring, and that it would be best to leave it alone since I am no longer retaining urine. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the hesitancy since I am supposedly "cured"? Am I really "cured" and just being impatient about the healing process or is more dilation necessary? What caused this in the first place? The frequent UTIs I had all my life? Please help! Thanks.

I do not think the current scenario is due to frequent UTIs in the past, and wonder if it is part of whatever caused the fever and vomiting (an unusual viral infection?). I am unsure about urethral stenosis being the cause of many of these situations.
I suspect the symptoms will gradually resolve, but might set up a visit to a major medical school/clinic for a second opinion should they persist.
Maybe there is some medication that might be helpful meanwhile (an alpha blocker?). Please ask your doctor for individual advice.

Hello!!
I am a woman of 26 years old and also have the same symptoms.
I too have been told I have some kind of uretral stenosis, the think it may be meatal stenosis because I also have 180ml of residual urine after having urinated.
Friday I'm going to have a cystoscopy and maybe a dilation. I am really terrified of these. Could ou tell me if the dilation s really painfull and how long it taked to recover. Do they put ou through local anesthesia and give you pain killers after ? What kind of pain, is it barable does it take long? When can one have sex after that? Does it hurt alot nly during urination after or all the time?I am also told that stenosis's are often chronic, that they reappear and that one has to undergo other dilations after. Do ou know?

Please give me ant details ou can, I am quite stressed out.

Noticed I was unable to completely void my bladder sometimes. Produced a good stream at times though. At recent physical, Dr. was alarmed at 'hard area in my abdomen'. CT scan revealed distended bladder. Was catheterized & drained of 1300 cc urine. After a month of 'internal catheterization, had a simple flow test - despite feeling full couldn't go.
Doing self-catheterization now pending a "urodynamic" test next month. Is it normal to lose all ability to urinate after being catheterized for a month? Heard you can be 'retrained to urinate' I can control i.e. push the urine out of the catheter but still not a drop from the penis otherwise.

Would welcome any advice!
