Should I start with a semen analysis first?

Post a new topicby topper06 on Wed Jul 23, 2008 1:07 am

Hi I am 27 years old and I have a fairly large varicocele on my left side. My wife and I have decided to start trying for kids now and I am wondering if I should go on and get a semen analysis or wait after 1 year of trying? I have read that 40% of men with varicoceles have trouble with low sprem count, so I am thinking maybe I should be proactive and have surgery if that will increase our chances of pregnancy. I am not having any pain, but my only concern is that we might not be able to have children and we both really want them. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also where do I go for the semen analysis? urologist or fertility specialist?

thanks

Typically you should go to a urologist. There are ones that specialize in male infertility. I would try to find one near you. Definatly go for the testing first. I was in your shoes and tried for about 9 months only to find there were issues due to varicoceles. It cant hurt to take the test, and save some time.
