Varicocele: Could it cause mild Epididymitis?

Post a new topicby 139 on Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:56 am

I was just told by one doctor the pain in my left testicle was due to a very swollen/tender stage #3 varicocele, then the next doctor told me my epididimus was very tender and inflammed etc. and that was the cause off the pain. Doctor number 2 is puzzeled by the fact that it has been progresivly been getting bigger (the varicocele) and more painfull over the past 6 months. The pain does not go away with lying down like it normally would if it was a varacocele.

My question is that if there is ayway that both are right, could the swelling of the varacocele while im standing put pressure on my epididimus which is the cause of the pain when i lie down?

Its definatly possible you can have both. They need to do a scrotal ultrasound to confirm the varicocele, and if there is a epididytimus infection they need to put you on meds.

I have just had the same! And more....

I went to my GP (local free doctor paid by the UK National Health Service) with a pain in the left testicle. She (yes, she!) diagnosed epididymitis and sent me off to see a urology registrar at the local NHS hospital who confirmed same. I was prescribed 5 weeks of Ciprofloxacin to clear it.

Whilst the pain abated, it did not completely go away. As I also have private health care from my work, I booked myself in to see a Urology consultant at my local private hospital. He diagnosed a varicocele as well as an inguinal hernia! Apparently the twp events are unconnected. I asked him if the GP and registrar had misdiagnosed and he said that there may have been epididymitis as well but now that had gone so no further need for anti-biotics. I was given an ultrasound and shown the enlarged veins and hernia. I am now seeing another consultant to fix the hernia but the Urology consultant said that if the varicocele was still giving me trouble early next year they could fix it.

He suggested that the epididymitis had possibly left the testicle feeling particularly sensitive and that the pain would abate over time. Noting that many varicocele are often asymptomatic, with the sufferer feeling no pain, I concurred.

However, reading some of these posts, if the discomfort I am feeling now is not likely to abate over time, perhaps I should insist an an operation to fix it as soon as possible?

I do not want to go another 4 months with my left nad feeling like this.....
